Why spring and summer could be the best time to get your boiler serviced

By HGS Plumbing & Heating  |  Estimated read time: 4 mins

Most people only start thinking about their boiler when colder nights start drawing in and the heating has to go back on. There’s always that moment of worry before you switch it back on, about whether your boiler will start playing up after months without using it – especially as most boiler breakdowns happen in winter, which is predictable as this is when it’s being used the most.

It’s only at this point that the thought of a boiler service tends to crop up. It’s understandable, because now you need your boiler. But that’s also working backwards.

Regular servicing keeps your boiler running efficiently, helping to reduce energy bills and could prevent small issues that could quickly spiral into something worse. Doing this earlier in the year means your boiler is ready for when you need it most.

Your boiler has just had its busiest time of the year

Think about what your boiler has been doing since roughly October – running every day, often for hours at a time, keeping you and your home warm through the coldest months of the year. By the time the sun finally arrives, the nights get longer, and you don’t need it running anymore, it’s certainly put a few more miles on the clock.

That’s exactly when a service makes the most sense, because a boiler service in spring and summer can catch anything that’s been put under strain over winter, before it quietly becomes something worse.

Small issues that could develop over a heavy-use period can have a habit of turning into bigger ones if they’re left to sit through the summer unattended, then these raise their heads when you start to use your boiler more. No one wants to see snow forecast, then have their boiler fail on them.

That’s why the majority of boiler breakdowns happen in the winter months. You’ve not used it for a few months, but then expect it to immediately ramp back up to heavy winter usage. It would be like trying to run a marathon without doing any warm up or stretches.

The pre-winter boiler service rush is real

When everyone waits until autumn or even early winter to book their boiler service, diaries can fill up quickly – and it could make any remedial work required take longer. Engineers have more appointments, and the people who do call with a genuine breakdown are competing for the same appointments as everyone else trying to get a service done.

Book in the quieter months and you’ll get a more convenient slot, less pressure all round – and you can be all smug when it does roll round to winter and everyone’s complaining about having to book their boiler service.

You get to enjoy summer properly

There’s something to be said for not having that nagging thought sitting in the back of your mind all summer. Got your boiler serviced in spring and summer? Done. Crossed off the list. You can go the rest of the year without your boiler even entering your thoughts.

After all, you spring clean the rest of your house – why not your boiler?

Prices don’t change with the season

At HGS, we charge the same for a boiler service regardless of when you book. There’s no premium for an emergency call-out, and no discount for waiting until it’s convenient for us. So there’s no financial reason to put it off; only good reasons to get it done sooner.

It keeps your warranty valid

Most boiler manufacturers will require an annual service as a condition of keeping the warranty in place if you have one. If you miss a year, you may find yourself paying out of pocket for a repair that otherwise would have been covered.
